Participants: Limited to 10 attendees
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM (with one hour break for lunch)

This five-day workshop will take place in the intimacy of Maestro Porfirio’s Studio. Spending time with him in his studio is an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in his deep creative process and life as a dyer and contemporary artist. Throughout human history, weaving has played an important role in everyday lives and in ceremonies. The Zapotec culture has been weaving for thousands of years and has been expressing their worldview through their textile art. In this five-day workshop we will explore how to warp, how to design and select colors, and how to transfer your designs from the page to the loom. The historical use of in the Zapotec culture, symbolism and designs.

We’ll weave our designs and learn how to finish them with various techniques. Each participant will weave on a provided frame loom that they get to take home. This immersive master class will be finished with a special traditional meal prepared by Maestro Porfirio’s family, around conversation and reflection about your learnings, culture, plants as color, sacredness, diaspora, and food. Porfirio will be sharing how he is preserving his ancestral practice and his artistic journey, life in Oaxaca and California, and the influences he finds in both cultures. 


This class is for all levels.

The workshop includes
Five days of intensive study with Porfirio, 5 hours per session
• Learn about the history of cloth in the Zapotec culture
• Learn to warp the loom
• All weaving material and naturally dyed yarn
Schacht School Loom
• Maestro Porfirio will present and a video on the story of harvesting Cochineal insect
• He will talk and about how his
work relates to the availability of materials and the cycle of nature.
• Create sketch on graph paper
Our last day will finish with a traditional meal made with family recipes. Please provide any dietary restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Suggestion
This workshop will take place outdoors on a shaded patio, but hat and sunscreen is suggested. Please bring comfortable working clothes, and maybe an apron. To avoid waste please bring your refillable water bottle.
