cultural immersion experiences
4-hour group experiences are offered in Ventura, CA and Oaxaca, MX
Join us for a cultural and arts experience at the studio of the master dyer and textile artist Porfirio Gutiérrez in Ventura, California or Oaxaca, Mexico. Experience the multigenerational traditional knowledge of the Zapotec people as it pertains to natural pigment dyes and weaving practices. During this half-day experience at our studios you will have the opportunity to dip your hands in the dyeing vat and dye your own cochineal wool scarf. You will enjoy a traditional lunch at the studio where you will have the opportunity to try Porfirio’s mother’s recipes, recipes that have not changed much from thousands of years. There will also be a mezcal tasting around a conversation about culture, plants as color, medicine, and food. Porfirio will be sharing how he is preserving his ancestral practice and his artistic journey, his life in Oaxaca and California, and the influences he finds living in both cultures.
The highlight of the experience is a natural dye and weaving demonstration. A deep dive into the spiritual dimension in his artistic practice.
